2018 Discovery Sport Vs. 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Not all SUVs are created equal. In fact, some SUVs are far more capable than others. Let’s take a look at 2 SUVs that claim to have superior performance in off-road situations, the 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport and the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Fuel Economy & Performance

The 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport has a 2.0 liter inline 4 cylinder engine that produces 240hp, peaking at 5800 RPMs. The 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, housing a 3.6 liter V6 engine produces 295hp, but not until 6400 RPMs. The really surprising thing is the Discovery Sport only produces 10 less ft-lbs of torque than the Jeep Grand Cherokee (250 ft-lbs compared to 260 ft-lbs), but the Land Rover Discovery Sport gives you the full torque much lower in the power band at only 1750 RPMs while you don’t reach full torque for the Jeep Grand Cherokee until 4800 RPMs.

With the Discovery Sport, you get a 9-speed automatic transmission and with the Jeep Grand Cherokee, you get an 8-speed transmission. With both being better than the old 6-speed transmission you used to get, having that extra gear the Land Rover allows for a slight fuel economy edge at 22 mpg, while the Cherokee comes in at 21 mpg combined.

While both vehicles have either AWD or 4WD capabilities, the history of the Land Rover provides for an unrivaled off-road experience. While the Jeep Grand Cherokee has made strides, it has also followed along the domestic manufacturer trajectory of progress which is still chasing the capabilities of the Land Rover.

One of the benefits of the Land Rover Sport is the 3rd row seating option. While slightly shorter in overall length than the Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Discovery Sport actually has more leg room and virtually identical measurements as compared to the Jeep Grand Cherokee, all while providing that 3rd row seating.

When you look at pricing between the 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport and the 2018 Jeep Grand Cherokee, you really notice a story that favors the Discovery Sport. Although, for the two vehicles compared here, the Discovery Sport MSRP is slightly above that of the Jeep Grand Cherokee ($37,695 compared to $35,990), however, you can lease a 2018 Land Rover Discovery Sport for only $29 more per month. At that price, why not experience luxury in a better performing, higher quality vehicle with the Land Rover Discovery Sport.
